Black Elderberries - For centuries elderberries have been a favorite amongst herbalist and is a prized homeopathic treatment for colds, flu, fevers, bronchitis and so much more. They are even known to reduce mucus production. Elderberries are high in Vitamin C. In fact, 100 grams of elderberries contain around 35 mg of Vitamin C which account for 60% of our daily recommendation making elderberries great for boosting the immune system. They are also super rich in antioxidants, Anthocyanins (water-soluble pigments), Vitamin A, Vitamin B6, Calcium, Iron and Tannins.
Wild Cherry Bark -Another prize amongst herbalist when it comes to respiratory issues. Because of it sedative qualities it can relax the muscles and suppress coughs as well as reduce and expel mucus. Making it a great alterative to pharmaceutical cough syrup. It is also kwon to soothe mild asthma attacks and aid in relaxation. It also contains great digestive properties and has been used to aid in expelling parasites and relive diarrhea.
Rosehips - One of natures most concentrated sources of vitamin c, containing over 60 times the amount of vitamin c as an orange. Because of their rich mineral content rosehips have been used to treat a variety of respiratory ailments and conditions. As well as improving kidney functioning.
Ginger - Another powerhouse that works by reducing inflammation and ridding the body of harmful bacteria (including drug resistant bacteria). It also helps normalize the immune system.
Cloves - One of my personal favorite ingredients to use because they are extremely rich in antioxidants. Cloves are known to boosts the immune system by killing of bad bacteria.
Cinnamon Bark - Is more than just flavor, it’s also rich in antioxidants and relieves inflammation.
About the kit:
Each kit contains my personal blend of herbs conveniently packaged in an organic unbleached muslin bag. Each kit yields around 32 oz. of elderberry syrup.
Place a large pot with about 7 cups of distilled water over medium high heat. Once the water comes to a low boil. Once the water begins to simmer carefully add the muslin bag filled with herbs. (Make sure the bag tightly tied). Allow the elderberry syrup to simmer for about1 hour uncovered. The mixture should reduce by about half. Then remove from the heat and allow it cool until it is about room temperature. Squeeze the excess liquid from the bag. Then add about 1-1/2 cups of your desired sweetener. Traditionally elderberry syrup is sweetened with honey but it can also be sweetened with agave, maple syrup, date syrup, or sugar which helps keep the syrup shelf stable and gives it the syrup consistency.
Store your elderberry syrup in a sterile glass jar with a lid and refrigerate.
If you are familiar with elderberry syrup, then you know that it is super expensive especially the if buy the organic kind. It usually cost about $19-30 for a 4oz bottle. So, making it yourself using my Elderberry syrup kit is super cost effective especially since the kit yields around 32oz of elderberry syrup.
